The European Movement in Northern Ireland has responded to reports that an internal EU paper has suggested that the avoidance of a hard border on the island of Ireland ‘effectively requires Northern Ireland remaining in the single market and the customs union’.

The European Movement in Northern Ireland (EMNI) has said the speech by the British Prime Minister in Florence on 22 September did not put forward any ideas to deal with the border on the island of Ireland as the UK leaves the Customs Union.

  The European Movement in Northern Ireland (EMNI) has said solutions have still not been found to mitigate the effects of the Hard Brexit on Northern Ireland.

European Movement NI has welcomed suggestions proposed by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to mitigate some of the worst excesses if a ‘Hard Brexit’ is imposed on Northern Ireland. EMNI had argued a ‘Hard Brexit’ is in contravention to the expressed wishes of the people of Northern Ireland, and that there is now no clear mandate for this.  Ian Parsley,
